Historically, regulations regarding Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) limits in building materials have varied by region, state and country, making it difficult to create products that can be used everywhere. In turn, this makes it difficult for construction professionals, who prefer to stick with products with performance characteristics that they know and trust. Unfamiliar viscosity and set times, for instance, can impact productivity and project delivery.
In 2021, California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) announced the launch of a study to lower VOC limits, and frequently, when VOC limits are lowered in California, other regions, states and even countries follow suit.
The Weld-On team began working with the SCAQMD providing input and product expertise to inform the process and was well positioned to adapt when the SCAQMD released its final VOC limits in 2023. Leveraging new technologies, advanced development processes and stringent field testing, Weld-On developed new formulations: Ultra Low VOC and ECO products. The new products met the regulations, effectively lowered emissions 30%, and exceeded Weld-On’s most demanding bond strength tests. They are not only safer for the environment, but for installers as well.
We applied the formulation to create 50 new products and adjusted the formulations to lower VOCs in thousands of SKUs.
