Plumbing Cement Comparison Guide: Heavy, Medium and Light

Today’s plastic piping is made to last for decades, but an improperly sealed joint can fail under the right conditions. By joining pipes correctly the first time, plumbers can build a reputation for quality that leads to long-term customer relationships.

If you work in the plumbing industry, then you’re most likely familiar with plumbing cement. If nothing else, you probably have an old can at the back of the shelf. But do you know which type of plumbing cement to choose for which job? Not all cements are created for every pipe.

Which Plumbing Cement Do You Choose?

First off, let’s talk about what plumbing cement isn’t. Although it’s sometimes referred to as plumbers glue or plumbing glue, plumbing cement is not a glue. Glues create a bond between substrates by adhesion. But, over time, glues dry out and their adhesive properties degrade—this is not ideal for plumbing applications where leaks can occur.

A solvent-based cement creates a seal via chemical fusion. When you apply plumbing cement, it starts by reacting with the plastic pipe and softening it a little. Connecting the two parts of the joints together while the plastic is still soft means that the entire pipe will reform and solidify as, essentially, one continuous piece.

It’s an effective solution, but there are a lot of different types of cement on the market. Even individual manufacturers will make several plumbers cement products to accommodate the various demands of each job.

When picking a plumbing cement, make sure you consider the following elements of your job so you pick the right product:

  • Plastic type
  • Pipe diameter
  • Pipe contents
  • Pressure
  • Temperature

In general, plumbing cement comes in three general types: Heavy, Medium, and Regular (sometimes referred to as Light). This speaks, in general terms, to the viscosity of the plumbers cement. More viscous cements have a higher resin content, leading to a thicker formulation. So while Light plumbers cement is a great all-purpose option for smaller pipe diameters with smaller gaps, Heavy plumbing cement should be used for bigger pipes or when other conditions are met.

Let’s talk about those conditions.

Plastic Type

Plumbing pipe typically comes in one of three types of plastic:

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC)
  • Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)

The type of plastic required for a particular plumbing job is determined by local building codes and considers factors like what will be carried through the pipe, the temperature and whether it will be under pressure.

Each type of plastic has a different chemical formulation, and so each type also needs a specific formulation of plumbing cement to react to it and get the proper seal. Suppliers like IPS’s Weld-On have different formulations for PVC, CPVC and ABS pipe.

Pipe Diameter

Once you’ve identified the type of plastic you’ll need to use for your project, spec out the diameter required. This is often the first differentiator when choosing a Heavy, Medium or Regular plumbing cement.

For example, Weld-On Regular-Bodied Plumbing Cement for PVC is rated as being appropriate for jobs up to four inches in diameter, while the Medium-Bodied PVC Plumbing Cement is rated for six inches for most types of jobs and four inches for Schedule 80 pipe (see the Pressure section below for more details), and the Weld-On Heavy-Bodied Plumbing Cement for PVC is rated for pipe diameters up to twelve inches.

Heavy-bodied cement is thicker, so if you’re connecting a larger diameter pipe and fitting they will have a larger gap between them, so you will need to use heavy-bodied cement to make sure they bond properly.

Pipe Contents

What materials will be flowing through your pipes will be part of determining the type of plastic you can use, as well as which Weld-On materials are most appropriate.

All plumbing applications involve water. For applications involving chemicals through the pipe, IPS Weld-On does offer Weld-On CPVC 724 Heavy-Bodied Cement. Contact IPS or your local Weld-On dealer for more information.

Pressure

You also should consider whether the pipes will carry materials flowing by gravity or under pressure. FlowGuard Gold cement is designed for small diameter pressure-fed CPVC supply lines. If you’re working on a pressure-fed system, speak to your Weld-On supplier for solutions to make sure your work lasts.

Certain pipes are designed specifically for high-pressure applications. The walls on Schedule-80 rated PVC pipe are thicker than those of Schedule-40 pipe, so they can handle higher pressure.  As a result, you may need to use a thicker/stronger cement on Schedule-80 pipe than you would on a Schedule-40 pipe of the same diameter to make sure it properly sealed.

Temperature

CPVC pipe has become a go-to material for hot water systems, and so CPVC plumbers cement is designed to last at higher temperatures. Weld-On materials for CPVC like 713 Low-VOC CPVC cement, and FlowGuard Gold are rated for hot water temperatures up to 170℉.

Temperature also comes into play in terms of the ambient temperature while you’re cementing your plumbing joints. Typically, a heavier-bodied cement takes longer to set than a medium- or regular-bodied option, though all types will set faster in warmer temperatures. So if you’re working in a hot area of a facility or outside on a hot day, consider upgrading to a medium- or heavy-bodied option if you need more time to get your joints in place.

Weld-On PVC 727 Hot ‘R Cold Medium Bodied Cement is rated for ambient temperatures ranging from -15℉  to 110℉.

Which Cement Is Right for You?

There are many factors to consider when choosing the right plumbing cement. Weld-On Plumbing Cement comes in a variety of formulations to suit many purposes. Make sure you have all the information about your job, then contact Weld-On or your local distributor to find the product that will work best with your needs.

Studor® Introduces New and Improved Recess Box for Air Admittance Valves

Smaller design, easier to install

Collierville, Tenn., November 21, 2011 — IPS® Corporation’s new Studor® brand Recessed Box for Air Admittance Valves offers an aesthetically attractive way to conceal, as well as conveniently access, air admittance valves in the drain, waste and vent (DWV) system. This Recessed Box is the newest innovation in the industry-leading Studor family of products designed to be used in place of expensive and complex open pipe plumbing and vent systems.

As part of its innovative design, the Studor Recessed Box utilizes an industry-first integral test cap that allows for leak testing and temporarily blocking of the DWV system. The small profile, one-piece box and mounting flange design requires no additional framing or support when attached directly to a stud. Alternatively, the box can be installed using Water-Tite’s Stabilizer Bar, allowing for positioning of the box anywhere in the stud bay. Unlike other designs, the Studor Recessed Box requires no adapter since it connects directly to a 1½-inch or 2-inch ABS or PVC DWV pipe, and the AAV device simply installs in the box via integral threads with the use of PTFE tape. The Studor Recess Box also features a snap-on grille for a sleek, clean finish.

Because of its versatility to fit multiple pipe types and sizes, the Studor Recessed Box can streamline and simplify inventories. The box can be used in conjunction with the Mini-Vent®, Tec-Vent®, or Redi-Vent® products. The box is also code approved, carrying both UPC and ICC listings.

Test-Tite® Announces Industry’s First Full Line of Pneumatic Test Plugs with Pressure Relief Valves

Reduces Risk of Over-Inflation

Collierville, Tenn., August 26, 2011 — IPS Corporation’s Test-Tite® brand Pneumatic Test Plug line is now available with Pressure Relief Valves. The expanded offering makes it the plumbing industry’s first full line of test plugs to feature safety relief valves that protect against excess inflation pressure, thereby reducing the risk of damage to plugs and drain, waste and vent (DWV) systems.

Developed specially for testing or temporarily blocking plumbing DWV systems, the patent-pending valve design automatically releases excess internal plug pressure when the plug exceeds maximum inflation pressure; the plug returns to its proper size, and the relief valve automatically resets. The relieved pressure exhausts through the top of the pressure relief valve and into the atmosphere, rather than into the test area.  The new pressure relief valves are incorporated into the current plug design already familiar to and trusted by plumbing contractors and can be used anywhere current, standard pneumatic test plugs are used.  Additionally, the pressure relief valve has no moving parts to fail or malfunction.

Test-Tite® brand Pneumatic Plugs with Pressure Relief Valves are available in a variety of styles and sizes, ranging from 1 1/2” through 15” for plumbing applications and in larger sizes for sewer applications. Test plugs come in single and multi-sizes. Standard test plugs, bypass plugs, and air test plugs are available depending on testing and maintenance needs. The plugs are designed to conform to irregular pipe shapes and are suitable for most pipe materials. They are protected with the industry’s leading three-year limited warranty.

Test-Tite® Pressure Relief Pneumatic Test Plug Reduces Risk of Over-Inflation

Collierville, TN. (March 23, 2010) – IPS Corporation’s new Test-Tite® Pressure Relief Pneumatic Test Plug features an internal-pressure, safety relief valve that reduces the risk of exceeding the proper inflation pressure. This patented design reduces the potential for damage to plugs and drain, waste and vent (DWV) systems. Los Angeles, CA (February 27, 2009) – Following our earlier announcement, we are pleased to inform you that by the end of first quarter 2009, all Weld-On® solvent cements, primers and cleaners produced by IPS® Corporation will meet the requirements for Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emission limits, established by the California South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). All primers and cleaners will continue to be Low VOC, as they have been for 15 years.

Weld-On was the first to develop Low VOC products for the plastic piping industry in 1992 and was instrumental in determining the appropriate VOC emission limits found in southern California’s SCAQMD Rule 1168. Today, the VOC emission limits established by that same rule have been adopted by LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and by the states of Connecticut, New Jersey, and Maryland. We expect the trend in legislation mandating Low VOC products to continue. Weld-On is proud to be on the forefront in using technology that contributes to a healthier environment.

Our Low VOC products will continue to offer the same high quality performance and installation properties you’ve come to expect from the market leader while providing the following benefits for you and your customers:

  • Environmentally responsible – Low VOC products contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment. Weld-On products meet the most stringent emissions regulations in the U.S., as mandated by SCAQMD Rule1168.
  • LEED Compliant – Use of our Weld-On Low VOC products can qualify you for one credit toward the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification for green building.
  • Cost savings/reduced inventory – Since our Weld-On products will only be Low VOC, there will be no need to carry dual inventory (regular and Low VOC products), which will reduce your costs while simplifying your inventory.
  • Better working conditions – Low VOC products are more user-friendly due to their lower VOC content.
  • NSF and UPC listed – Approved for use in applications such as potable water, turf, irrigation, pool, industrial, fire protection, electrical conduit, DWV, and/or sewer installations and repairs.
  • Meets ASTM strength standards for solvent cements and primers used for plastic pipe installation.

TRANSITION OVERVIEW

The new, all Low VOC product line will use the 700 series of names and part numbers. Once we are fully transitioned, the 2700 series of products will no longer exist, and the “new” 700 series will be all Low VOC. For example, 711 Quart will still exist with Part # 10119 (and be Low VOC), while 2711 Quart (Part #11005) will not exist.

LOW VOC PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION

HOW TO ORDER

1) If you are currently ordering the 700 Series of products (e.g. 711, 717):

  • You will still order the same products and SKU numbers, and these will be Low VOC. Once fully transitioned, all of the Weld-On cements will use the 700 Series numbers so you don’t have to change anything in your system.
  • During the first half of 2009, as we transition all products to the Low VOC Series, you may experience mixed batches of Low VOC and non-Low VOC cements in the 700 series. You can easily identify the 700 series Low VOC products by the new can, carton and carton label format as noted above.

2) If you are currently ordering the 2700 Series of products (e.g. 2711, 2717):

  • You will order the equivalent 700 Series number (e.g. 711, 717) once we have fully transitioned. Continue to order the 2700 series until instructed to change, which will be sometime in the 2nd quarter of 2009.
  • During the first half of 2009, as we transition all products to the Low VOC Series, you may experience mixed batches of 700 series (new Low VOC version) and 2700 series. Note that both of these products will be the same, just in different packaging with different part numbers. You can easily identify the 700 series Low VOC products by the new can, carton and carton label format as noted above.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What does Low VOC mean?
VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds which are emissions in materials. Low VOC products contribute to cleaner air. The requirements of what constitutes “Low VOC” has been established by SCAQMD Rule 1168/316A (see below).

Who sets the requirements for Low VOC solvent cements and primers?
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (“SCAQMD”), an air pollution control agency for southern California, sets strict emissions control requirements (Rule 1168/316A) which Weld-On meets with its Low VOC products. Many other states have adopted or are in the process of adopting SCAQMD Rule 1168/316A emission limits and/or similar limits for solvent cements and primers.

Am I required to use Low VOC solvent cements and primers?
Which states require the use of Low VOC solvent cements and primers?
Low VOC solvent cements and primers are currently required in California, Maryland, New Jersey and Connecticut. Requirements are also under consideration in several other states, including New York, Rhode Island, and Maine. Even where not required, Low VOC products are a good idea because they contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment.

How long has Weld-On been making Low VOC solvent cements and primers?
IPS® Corporation, under the Weld-On® brand name, was the first to offer Low VOC products to the plastic piping industry in 1992. Weld-On’s Low VOC products have been sold into the California market, as well as almost all other states and internationally, for over 15 years and have a proven track record as the best cements on the market.

How are Low VOC solvent cements and primers different than non-Low VOC solvent cements and primers?
Weld-On’s Low VOC solvent cements and primers provide the same performance, have the same installation properties, but are better for the environment and more user-friendly than non-Low VOC products.

Can I use my current inventory of 700 Series regular VOC product now that IPS Corporation is transitioning to all Low VOC 700 Series?
Unless you live in California, Maryland, New Jersey, or Connecticut where the use of Low VOC solvent cements and primers is mandated, the Weld-On products currently in your inventory are good for use, just as they always have been. During the first half of 2009, as we transition all products to the Low VOC Series, you may experience mixed batches of Low VOC and non-Low VOC cements in the 700 series. All batches are good for use.

Your input and comments are always welcome. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Customer Service Representative at 800-888-8312 or your Weld-On representative.

All Weld-On® Solvent Cements and Primers will meet stringent VOC Emission limits in 2009

IPS® Corporation continues its unwavering commitment to the environment.

Compton, CA (December 17, 2008) – IPS Corporation is proud to be the first in the solvent cement manufacturing industry to offer all of its WELD-ON products in environmentally-responsible, Low VOC (volatile organic compound) formulations. By the end of March 2009, all WELD-ON solvent cements, primers and cleaners will meet the most stringent VOC emission limits in the United States – Rule 1168/316A, established by California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD).

“Having pioneered the first Low VOC solvent cement for use on plastic piping systems in 1992, we are and will continue to be committed to developing top-quality WELD-ON products that are also environmentally responsible.” said Janet Reilly, President of the WELD-ON Division of IPS Corporation. “Achieving Low VOC emission limits across our entire product line is a bold step marking our unwavering dedication to the betterment of the environment.” added Reilly.

WELD-ON solvent cements, primers and cleaners are used to prepare and join PVC, CPVC, and ABS pipe, valves and fittings in residential, commercial and industrial applications. Our Low VOC products – with lesser VOC emissions – will contribute to cleaner air and better workplace conditions. California was the first state to recognize the benefits of Low VOC by enacting Rule 1168/316A over 15 years ago. And now, Connecticut, Maryland and New Jersey are adopting similar legislation effective Jan. 1, 2009 with other states likely to follow suit later in 2009 and beyond. Environmental rating systems like LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) also recognize the importance of Low VOC emissions by awarding credits for the use of Low VOC products. Given such growing interest by government and industry groups, IPS Corporation is pleased to be one of the first companies to play a key role in reducing VOC emissions to the environment.

Cementing Relations with Southern Neighbors

IPS® Corporation Partners with Plastic Pipe and Fittings Association and the Colorado School of Mines for Humanitarian Project in Honduras

Compton, CA (January 31, 2008) – IPS® Corporation is contributing product and technical expertise to a Plastic Pipe and Fittings Association (PPFA) humanitarian project in Colinas de Suiza, Villanueva, Honduras. In conjunction with the Colorado School of Mines and the Food for Poor Foundation, PPFA, IPS Corporation and other PPFA members are contributing to the engineering and construction of a potable water system for the 1,650 families living in Colinas de Suiza. The families spend about 25 percent of their income to purchase daily, often contaminated, water rations, trucked to the community over difficult terrain.

David Munoz, PhD, Associate Professor of Engineering, Division of Engineering, and Director of the Humanitarian Engineering Program at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) began working on the project four years ago when they first discovered the poor water distribution conditions. Dr. Munoz and his team of engineering students designed a new and better community water distribution system for Colinas de Suiza. In the process, CSM identified the materials necessary to build the new system. Dr. Munoz reached out to the PPFA for help from its membership.

The PPFA presented the opportunity to contribute product and technical expertise to Terry McPherson, Vice President, Technical Services, IPS Corporation, who was enthusiastic about helping Colinas de Suiza improve the quality of life for its citizens. McPherson rallied IPS Corporation to contribute Weld-On® PVC medium and heavy-duty solvent cements and primers.

In addition to the PVC cement products, IPS Corporation provided technical expertise. Stephen Gardiner, Bilingual Training Representative, Technical Services, IPS Corporation, went to Colinas de Suiza where he worked with Dr. Munoz and the CSM student engineering team reviewing plans, availability and storage of needed pipe, fittings and cements. The team provided instructions to and worked with the local six-man Villanueva Water and Sanitation Department installation crew. Gardiner presented a solvent welding seminar in Spanish to the crew in the local church. He worked with the crew trenching, laying and solvent welding four-inch PVC main line pipes and two-inch pipes from the storage tank over some steep terrain. Gardiner did the solvent welding of joints initially and then turned it over to the installation crew.

The Food for Poor Foundation, working with Dr. Munoz, the PPFA and the Municipality of Villanueva, coordinated activities of the Honduras Project partners including the shipping and delivery of materials. The Food for Poor Foundation raises funds and provides direct relief assistance to the neediest people in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Several years in the making, the Colinas de Suiza potable water system project is planned for completion this spring. According to Gardiner, the residents of Colinas de Suiza are excited by the progress and the soon-to-be-realized improvement in their quality of life. Gardiner will be returning with Dr. Munoz in March to further assist in the completion of the project and the cementing of relations with southern neighbors.
